Chapter 9 Pages 53-54

Turns out Akiva can be good at giving comfort talks when she needs to be.

Comic transcript

Akiva tilts her head into her hand. AKIVA: "Seriously, though. You're not Anael. Not anymore. That's kind of the whole point, isn't it? I mean, I'm not my past lives either. We're formed by the life we're in now. That's part of being human, I guess. You get to start new every time. You're just Darcy now, because the Elixir of Life gave that to you. And when you pass on from this life, you'll be just somebody else." Darcy watches her pensively, then looks down. DARCY: "Not just somebody else. You heard Athir earlier. I'm human, but that power never left me.I don't GET to start completely new every time. That's what terrifies me. Both the thought of it overwhelming me, and the chance Bahram will get it." AKIVA: "Yeah, that's really scary. But we're gonna figure out the Bahram thing! That's why we're here. And all that extra power you have... I mean, think of all the good you can do, right? If anyone is capable of handling it, it's you. It's not like it's some separate entity clinging to you. It's a part of you." Darcy smiles at her, then looks away again, bashfully this time. DARCY: "How does it feel to be completely your own energy?" AKIVA: "Um, I don't feel any different, honestly." DARCY: "Me neither." AKIVA: "Well, I'm glad I was cool enough in my last life for you to want to keep meeting me. Even though I'm bad at first impressions." Darcy smiles and gently play-punches her arm. DARCY: "You're not so bad... Sorry for running off all the time. I just don't know what to do about all this." AKIVA: "You don't have to do anything. Just be you."
